Year/Publican or other Resident/Relationship to Head and or Occupation/Age/Where Born/Source.

My Essex ancestors were the Grout family of Loughton. As far back as I have been able to go, early to mid 1700, the family were living on Baldwin's Hill in a loppers cottage. This became a beer shop, then grocer and beer shop, and eventually The Foresters Arms, which it remains today.

I understand that my particular branch of the family remained in the pub until the 1920's some time - could even have been later. I believe the Grout family who at one time owned Foresters and Gardeners were reasonably " well off" and owned quite a few cottages in the vicinity of Baldwin's Hill, which they sold. They also held title to some of Epping Forest a large part of which was appropriated by the council - way, way, back.

Another branch of the family had the Gardeners Arms on York Hill. My grandparents Grout had the Anchor Inn and the Kings Head in Guisborough. (N.Yks). My aunt Hampson had the Buck Hotel in Guisborough. Aunt Hampson then had the Old Dog in Preston, Lancs., and the Mount Pleasant, Cocker St/High St Blackpool. Father-in-law Wood had the Crown and Anchor in Redcar North Yorkshire ***

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
