"While not unique, a double sided inn sign is sufficiently unusual to have
aroused considerable interest. Especially around the docks area where the Tidal
Basin Tavern is known as one of the most persistently blitzed of all dockland
houses.
On Monday, January 30th, a new sign was unveiled there by the bos'n of the Royal
Mail Ship, Highland Brigade. The sign bears on one side the painting of the
Highland Brigade, a 14,700 ton vessel, and on the other a painting of the
Teviot, a paddle steamer which sailed from the London Docks in 1847.
Jim Church, the licensee of the Tidal Basin Tavern, and his wife, are well known
to the crews of the Royal Mail Line Ships, which berth at the Royal Victoria
Docks, adjacent to the house. At the time of the unveiling, the Highland Brigade
was at anchor and the outline of the ship, against the skyline behind the Tidal
Basin Tavern, was a fitting background to such an occasion.
A party from the Bolivian Embassy was present at the unveiling (the Royal Mail
Line Ships call at S America0, and J W C Lynch, R J Bracken and H G Spillane
represented the brewery." - Spring 1950 'The Black Eagle, Quarterly Journal of
Truman's Brewers ***
J Burton, died on May 16th 1961, aged 90 years. He had been the licensee of the
Prince of Wales, Enfield, for twenty seven years; and previously at the Tidal
Basin Tavern and the Ram, Silvertown - Black Eagle Journal ***
